I wrote about his record against teams ranked in the top 25 by year's end. It's not good. When I wrote it was 3-19. It's now 3-22. This particular statistic can seem misleading though because winning against teams that are ranked at the end of the year (not game time) is really hard. Being ranked at years end is a true measure of strength and so they're actually really good teams, which usually ruins people's records in this category. A lot of good coaches don't do well with this stat. However, usually not as bad as 3-22. In fact, even at 1-7, Gary Andersen is statistically superior.
I like Mendenhall alright, so this doesn't bother me that much, but I do bring it up when people want to say that he is a super winning coach and people are blind to see all those wins, etc...
