Is it not the coaches job to motivate the players? Are you saying that no coach can motivate in this situation? Or just that ours can't?

I'm surprised we've ever won a bowl game since the outcome really doesn't impact conference standings.

Is this why there are so few BYU players in the NFL? They don't play or try as hard as there talent would allow?

To sum up your thought, BYU is a much more talented team than they have shown in the last 5 years but routinely underperforms because they don't care or try hard enough and this is not the coaches fault.

At best this logic could explain another challenge, on a long list of challenges for the coaches. But it is the coach's job to motivate despite the challenges.
