This is true
I work a lot with developing female wrestlers and opportunities for them. There are 30+ colleges now that offer scholarships for women's wrestling. We had a girl that was offered what would amount to a full ride after pell would be added, etc. She then couldn't get pell because she was not a citizen. Her parents had come to USA illegally when she was an infant and that had never been corrected.

She wasn't able to go to the school and her actual coach in HS is kind of bitter about it and blames the college coach for not making it work for her. Both have participated on a committee I serve on and occasionally this HS coach goes off on tirades about the "system" and "others" that don't care about these girls. Thing is this HS coach is doing some great things for these girls - he has 13 girls that were on his team this last year. And he has worked with some neighboring schools to also recruit and develop additional girls. They had 30+ girls at a city championship event in their own girls division earlier this year. But this coach has kind of been such an agitator since that situation happened that he would not have his phone call returned by this college coach anymore. If a girl from that school wanted to go to that college they or their parents would have to call and not the coach

The college coaches hands were tied. FAFSA would not process her which eliminated pell and then further complicated things because many many other grants or scholarships require that you be processed through FAFSA before they would pay out anything either. The college coach actually bent over backwards working for a long time to give this girl opportunities and it just wasn't going to happen.
