BYU IS governed by a religion. It is because of that religion that the HC exists. I'm not saying that the HC should cease to exist. I'm not saying that students shouldn't be expelled based on poor behavior.
I'm simply saying that the HC system as it stands, appears to have much more in common with the Pharisaical governance in old Israel than it has in common with any of the talks I hear over the pulpit at General Conference or what I read in any of Christ's sermons from the NT.
The attitude seems to be more aligned with "keep the 99 sheep together and kick that bad one over a cliff" rather than "leave the 99 and go after the lost one."
Again - I get that some people have no interest in following the rules at all. To me, those are the prodigal children. Give them their inheritance and send them on their way. If they decide to return, great. But they'll have to again agree to live by the rules of the house (BYU).
However - those who genuinely want/need help to make a change. Those are the ones I want to keep.
