Is it strange that I wouldn't want BYU to celebrate people like Eli Herring
with monuments and statues? Don't get me wrong...I think we should celebrate good people and things. However, I worry that when we do this it turns the act of doing it away from pure motives to...other motives (I do it because other people see me do it, I will be celebrated, People expect it of me).

I guess this isn't unique to BYU or Mormon culture. We humans deal with it all the time. There are no easy answers on this one. If BYU continues doing what they are doing there appears to be some hypocrisy. If they chose to only recruit Sunday-only players they essentially wouldn't have many sports (and even then they probably wouldn't be competitive in any) which would have an effect on BYU's influence around the world. In addition, I can already hear people whining about how BYU isn't inclusive enough because it doesn't allow players who played on Sunday.
