Usually they have 3 or 4. The Referee and two ARs. The ARs are typically the
ones that signal offside, because they should have a view right down the defensive line. It would be a rare occasion when a referee called offside without the signal from the AR or ignored the AR call. He would have to have seen something he thinks the AR missed, or not believed the offside position was involved in the play.
