Without seeing your child or what your dentist saw, here are my thoughts:
Utah is a very difficult environment for dentists to survive, let alone thrive. I like to believe that any dentist is doing what he thinks is best. Some are more aggressive about treating signs of decay where others are content to watch things and see what happens. In Utah, where dentists are struggling to make ends meet, it's very possible some are going to be more aggressive anyway. It's unfortunate that this may be what happened to you. However, it's possible your daughter was an aberration and needed more treatment. It's possible that he was being too aggressive. But please don't insult the rest of us because you had a bad experience.

There are days where I am basically agonizing over x-rays trying to decide what is best for the child because I don't want to overtreat but I also don't want to leave decay in someone's mouth, and yet I know that whatever I decide the payment is coming out of the parents' pockets. There are some situations where things are really close to whether you treat or not. As I said that goes back to the dentist's personal philosophy that he or she has to live with. Personally, I'm usually very conservative. But there are times when I feel it's important to be more aggressive with certain patients. You really have to take every case on an individual basis. Again, please don't just insult our entire profession. Many of my friends are pediatric dentists and they are very very good people. Your philosophy of let the teeth fall out or "just pull the baby teeth" is terrible and there is absolutely no question that it leads to space problems in adults.
