you don't do root canals on primary teeth due to pain. Actually, generally you don't do root canals on primary teeth at
all, you do vital pulpotomies. Which then require a stainless steel crown. And you do them when decay extends into close proximity to or into the pulp chamber.

Generally if a primary tooth is to the point of having pain due to decay, you're looking st extracting it. And doing a filling to avoid the root canal is a non-issue if the decay is into the nerve. the tooth dictates the treatment, not our desires.
