Two things. First, belonging to a G5 conference is the very definition of "G5." Second, by any measure you want to use,
BYU is not a G5-like program. We make far more money than even the most successful G5 programs, we have better facilities than any G5 program (not elite by P5 standards, but still very P5-like), and we have far more fans than any G5 program (top 30 in attendance, and one of the top 3 or so, depending on the year, in the West). We also play far more P5 teams than any G5 program. And future schedules add even MORE P5 games. We also have a far more storied history than any G5 program, including a Heisman and NC.

I'm not claiming to be P5 either, by the way. We don't belong to a P5 conference, and we haven't been written in as a P5 to the playoff agreement like ND has. We're in our own little category, really. Clearly separated from G5, and not part of P5. Note that when the national media has occasion to divide programs G5/P5 for whatever reason, they generally lump us in with P5. Not that that means much of anything, but it seems that some in our own fan base think much less of our program than national football media
