Some, as Cougschwa, suggest attendance at football games has gone down because of going independent. I do not think this is case as there are many more circumstances at play here. One, "back in the day" you could not see many BYU football games on television. At best the games were re-broadcast on BYUtv (not the MWC years). People attended the game because that is the only way you could see the game live. Two, ticket prices for games. Ticket prices for games have increased dramatically from the days when the stadium sold out. Three, to be on TV and accommodate ESPN, CBSSN, etc. many games are played at night, and on Thu and Fri. Thu night is a weeknight with work and school for many the next day. Fri night competes with local high school games. Four, the MWC/WAC games were with regional teams. While a team like Wisconsin travels well, I would venture an educated guess that games against regional teams would draw an uptick in fans from visiting teams than other visiting teams from outside the region. There are probably other factors at play, but comparing stadium attendance now as to before independence is comparing "apples with oranges" because the college football and BYU football landscape are so different now. I like independence. The worst independent home-game schedule has been no worse than what a MWC home-schedule would have been. I like playing a variety of teams from across the country. I like that we have removed ourselves from the vitriol and animosity harbored by fans and athletes in the MWC. I like that I can watch every BYU Football game on TV. The West Coast Conference is a great conference for our other teams to compete in, with other faith-based universities that have more in common with BYU. Would I like to see BYU in a P5 conference, yes! Until then I like independence.
