You follow Brian Kelly's example at ND and make wholesale changes. Something like the following:

1. Demote Tuiaki to defensive line coach.
2. Move Ed Lamb to Defensive Coordinator.
3. Fire Kaufusi as LB coach and offer him one of the staff positions responsible for watching over player welfare.
4. Hire a new LB coach with some fire (I'd love to get Poppinga but not sure he'd come).
5. Demote Detmer to QB coach and force him to take a pay cut. If he won't take a pay cut, fire him.
6. Go find an up and coming offensive mind from the D-II level. Someone who's offense is averaging 40 points a game and pay them whatever it takes. Or hope and pray that the Falcons fire Sark after this year and he needs a job for 1-2 years to repair his reputation.
7. I'd let the new OC hire his own staff, but I'd recommend firing Cahoon and moving Mahe to one of the recruiting positions on staff. I'd also recommend keeping Empey.
8. Fire the S&C staff and bring in Pendleton. This may be the most important decision of all.

Finally, I'd tell Holmoe that if we really want to compete, we need at least $1-2 mil more in salary money for coaches. I'd tell him that football is the "golden goose" for the entire athletic program, and that if football dies, the entire athletic program is at risk financially. We cannot afford to run the football program on a shoe string budget and expect to compete.
