What you linked is not nuanced at all. It's a birds eye view. Here's nuance:
We ran 9x in the first half, threw 15. Of those passes, 6 came during a two minute drill and three more were necessitated by sacks or third and long. This means the defense was dictating what we called, in other words: it wasn't the game plan. Pull the two minute drill and it almost exactly even with run/pass play calls. Adjust for sacks which forced a few passes and the plan was clearly run heavy.

On those 9 run calls in the first half, we got 50 yards. If those 50 yards, 22 of them came on two plays, back to back, on one drive. Once you account for that anomaly, we averaged 2.54 yards on the other 7 attempts.

Our average third down and distance was 3rd and 10. In hindsight, maybe it would have been better to run on those 3rd downs, but we'll never know. After half we were immediately down two scores, as UMass drove 75 yards for a td against that tough defense of ours.
