BYU won't leave independence without some media concessions
though. BYU is unlike every other team in the Big12 because a majority of their alumni base is outside the Big12 footprint (even teams with big alumni bases like Texas are still primarily spread out inside the Big12 footprint).

This means that UNLIKE MOST BIG12 alumni and fans, most BYU alumni and fans would need to buy the expensive sports packages to see the Fox games (they probably wouldn't be included on the basic or next-tier cable packages). This was one of the big complaints about the Mtn in the first place. Everyone could see the games on the MTN, but only by paying whatever DirectTV wanted to charge us. We'd be back in the dark ages again if most of our games were broadcast on Fox.

Now this is obviously a big boon to Fox because not only would they add the SLC market, but they'd get a ton of West Coast subscribers to Fox sports packages as well. Its a raw deal for BYU fans because now they have to pony up. We might be more willing to give more games to Fox, but I would still bet we will want an assurance for a required number of games to be broadcast on either ESPN or BYUTV.
