Good info, here are a couple more thoughts
And by the way, I am not trying to be a jerk here. Anyway, I am just struggling to see why football is different from other sports and I am voicing that struggle (maybe a little too sarcastically). You use basketball as an example, but what about the other men's sports:

Basketball - 985
Cross Country - 982
Golf - 984
Swimming - 961
Tennis - 972
Track - 960/963
Volleyball - 970

Football - 932

This is the part that is confusing me and regardless of your assumptions, I am not trying to play dumb. Why is football so different? You mention that football has more players to watch over. Is it really that simple? Are the coaches just paying more attention and giving extra instruction to their players in other sports? If it's simply a matter of attention to players, wouldn't we see this same discrepancy at other schools as well.

You then mention that transfers and players who serve missions prior to enrolling could selectively help every sport except football. Perhaps this is true and this is the only argument that makes any sense to me. Football has to have a bunch of players who play as freshmen and then leave for missions and the other sports must avoid this somehow. Maybe athletes in each of the other sports serve their missions before joining the team. I don't have the time to look up that kind of data but it would be interesting to see how many 18/19 year old freshman actively participate on those other teams. If your theory is correct, the football team should have a much higher percentage of 18 year olds than any of the other sports.

You could have summed up your long post with a couple of sentences highlighting that point, but I appreciate the effort you put in and I read through all the data.
