I can imagine a season where BYU loses to Utah and then goes on to do great things, while Utah smolders like a dumpster fire. But, generally, when Utah beats BYU, the perception will be that Utah had a better season. Even this year, with Utah sucking and BYU doing at least OK, I think the perception is that Utah is on the rise and BYU on the decline. This is part of why I am really confused about Utah being excited to not play the Rivalry Game. The last two seasons, winning the Rivlary game dramatically affected the perception of both programs, and not in BYU's favor. If that game just hadn't been played the past two years, I think Utah would look like a un-holy mess, while BYU looked like a slowly-building program.
