Honest question about some inconsistencies
There's lots of talk about how it's perfectly reasonable (albeit unfortunate) for someone to go to Utah (for whatever reasons - grades, specific programs, location, whatever) and still be a BYU fan, wearing BYU gear.

In fact, there's been a lot of talk that they were never real fans if someone was a BYU fan and then goes to Utah and roots for their alma mater.

But there's also a ton of posts disparaging the idea of ALUFs and saying that if someone goes to BYU and roots for Utah (regardless of their background or prior rooting interest) they shouldn't be there. That you HAVE to root for your alma mater.

I say this as someone who grew up rooting for Utah, going to games with my dad. It meant a lot to me. When it came time to go to college, I ended up at BYU (due, in large part, to the relative ease of getting in and the availability of scholarships, moreso than any loyalty or fandom for BYU). So with all that, should I be a Utah fan? It's how I grew up after all. Or should I root for the place I went to school?

Or is it just bad when a family supports a school the kid is at if it's not BYU, but good when it's BYU? What if the kid grew up a BYU fan, then goes to USU? Or Stanford? or Georgia Tech, Boise St, whatever? Should the family root for those teams?
