RE: I grew up a Ute fan. The BYU-Utah dynamic is unique...
Wasn't trying to upset anyone by saying that. Just saying that I can understand how a kid feels when they don't get into the more highly-regarded/rated school they want (or in my case don't get enough scholarship money to make it feasible) and ends up going to their backup/safety school.

For some people, Stanford, Duke, CalTech are the goals and BYU is the safety school there as a backup
For others (like in the original post) BYU is the goal and Utah is the safety/backup
And there's others who would love to get into Utah but have UVU or a JC or something else as a fallback

Stating that Utah isn't as strong academically as BYU and is easier to get into is a fact and shouldn't be taken as a slap in the face of people who are hoping to do enough to get to Utah (given the mid 60s acceptance rate, these people clearly do exist). It's just factual. Similarly it's factual that there exist schools that are harder to get into than BYU. Which is why I used the term 'relative' because it all depends on what you're comparing it to.

My point is more that if a kid is feeling bad about not getting into the place they wanted, it doesn't help to have parents continue to laud how great the place is that didn't want you and to be negative towards the place the kid did end up. Honestly I think it's awesome of parents to be supportive of Utah when their kid is there. My parents (including my Utah alum dad) were very supportive of BYU while I was there and it ended up being an important part of my life, even if it wasn't what I'd initially wanted.
