Magathisll In Pope We Trust
You don't have to follow anyone else's rules when cheering in sports. You are more than free to cheer for both teams.
The fact of the matter is that everyone has different experiences that shape how they view the world, and there is a lot of bad blood between BYU and Utah fans. Growing up my dad taught me to love BYU and hate Utah just like he did.

When it came time to apply for college, I applied to Utah because I was worried I wouldn't get into BYU and I wanted to keep my options open. I ended up getting into BYU, but for a while I was considering going to the U. Honestly the idea made me cringe and I all but decided that if BYU didn't accept me I would do UVU for a year and transfer. I couldn't bring myself to affiliate with the program that I hated.

I can understand Utah fans growing up with experiences completely opposite of mine, attending BYU and still rooting for Utah, but I'm very biased towards BYU and against Utah and I'm always going to have some level of disdain for their program and fans. It's part of what makes sports more interesting.
