Some people are very good at doing something, and yet suck when asked to explain and teach it to others. So, no, I can't agree with your statement.

Now, in the specific case of Ty Detmer, we know it wasn't his physical ability that kept him in the league for 14 years. We know that he helped coach and mentor other QB's. So, from his NFL career we know that he is a capable QB coach.

Then he became a high school HC and has managed to turnaround a winless program. So now we know he can handle coaching more than just a position.


So, we've seen that he can coach. Now, does that mean he's capable of coordinating a complicated D1 offense? Can't say that with 100% certainty, but I believe he can and right now hope to find out.
