canndyman Walk-on
Simple...
Pedigree, personality, and potential.

Bronco was great, but he was boring, awkward, and interacted with his players like a bishop or guidance counselor.

Kilani is a players coach, and that's a great starting characteristic for a good headcoach. He's someone that can transcend position groups and units. Someone that can connect and lead ALL players on the field, not just his defensive unit, or a select group of gritty, hard working walk-ons. Someone who can identify that he doesn't know everything, admit that, and then put people that know more than him about certain aspects of the game, and then put them in roles and positions where they can make up for his lack of knowledge in said areas. People who can teach what he can't.

That's something Bronco didn't have. He wasn't humble. He insisted on being the smartest guy in the room, and surrounded himself with staff that ensured, or at least made him feel, like that was the case. i.e. Brandon Doman, Nick Howell, etc.

Bronco was a great defensive coordinator who was made a head coach, and you can tell he was uncomfortable with it his entire career at BYU, i.e. interviews, media and fan interactions, decision making, etc.

Kilani, on the other hand, has the personality and characteristics of a head coach, he just lacks the experience. He's been rising the ranks with the goal of being a head coach. I feel like Bronco more or less stumbled upon it, and is riding that wave. It's not his natural inclination.

It will come natural to Kilani. He doesn't know what he doesn't know, but he'll learn that with time. That being said, the intangibles you want to see in a head coach are there.
