Have you ever actually met him?
I ask this, because you basically wrote every false thing, that those that hated him, would put on here.None of the mischaracterizations had any base to them, but were for some reason, repeated on here and by Ute fans, as if they were fact. As someone that has actually met him, spent a lot of time with him away from the cameras, has seen him interact with his players, coaches, and fans and has actually spoken to his former players about their feelings for him; you could not be any further from the person that Bronco is.
On camera, there is no doubt that he was not comfortable, and came across as shy, boring, and quiet, but that is just a person that doesn't like being on camera. Outside of those press conferences, if you ever spent any time with him, you would meet a person that is well spoken, very humble, loved his players, and very sincere with those relationships that he made with fans and players alike. I have written about a few of my own personal interactions with Coach Mendenhall, and how kind he was to all those involved with the Thursday's hero families, but I have gotten the same feedback from nearly every other person that I have ever talked to, about their interactions with him.(both football and non-football related) He is a very deep, intellectual person, but not once, did I ever see him act condescending, arrogant, or as if he was better or more intelligent than anyone else. He always spoke highly of his assistant coaches, and never tried to deflect the blame on them when something went wrong.
You are welcome to your opinion about his job on the field, but to attack someone's character and relationship with others, is wrong. I know his many of his players personally(as I am sure many others here do too), and the majority of those players will still run through walls for the man. He cared deeply about those players, as did his assistant coaches, and that did not end once they left the program or graduated. Of course, you will find a few players that didn't like his style or felt differently, but considering that he coached over a thousand players(including practice squad) during his time, not all will like any coach. The majority of players saw an active coach, that was fun, not afraid to tell them like it is, but also not afraid to shed tears or crowd surf depending on the situation. The Bronco that was on camera, is far from the Bronco that the players dealt with day to day, and there is no reason to write about someone's character, that you are only getting from message boards or interviews.
