He and his wife both served missions in Italy. They love the people, the language, the culture, and the country. No better time to live abroad - in a country that you and your wife LOVE - than with your wife before kids come.
From a life perspective, sounds like a pretty solid decision. Sure beats classes, exams, and the mediocre WCC tour - while living in Wymount.
