He was a walk-on so he wasn't taking up a scholarship, he left because ...
...coaches let him know he had no shot. In 2009 he ran the scout team so coaches should've been able to make a good assessment and see his talent. I think even then coaches were too enamored with Nelson (blinded by bromance) and hopeful of Heaps. Sorensen was still looking to compete at BYU and wasn't looking to transfer until Doman showed him the door in a very nice way letting him know he wasn't going to get the chance to compete.

"I wasn't interested at that time," Sorensen said, "because I still thought I could compete and have a chance to play at BYU. But things didn't play out."

As the season rolled along, Sorensen began planning a transfer, with Southern Utah a possible destination.

On his own, Sorensen drove from Provo to watch the Thunderbirds play.

He liked the wide-open offense, which is nearly identical to the one run at BYU.

He also liked the fact that record-setting quarterback Cade Cooper, who once played at BYU, was a senior.

Southern Utah got some recruiting help, too, when it became obvious Sorensen was leaving.

With five coaches on its staff who played or previously worked at BYU, including Lamb, Doman pointed him in the Thunderbirds' direction.

"Because the lack of opportunity for Brad here," he said, "I thought, 'He's a talented young man. He could probably help them.'"

----------------------

It doesn't matter if fans thought he was great or not before he left, what matters here is Coaches had every opportunity to evaluate his talent and see that while he ran the scout team in 2009 and they were blind. Ed Lamb recognized his talent from long distance enough that he saved a scholarship for him when he heard he was leaving rather than give it to other kids he was looking at.

At the end of the season Doman helped Sorensen leave by pointing him in the direction of SUU, basically paving the way. Maybe Doman acted totally on his own and Bronco had no idea but I have a hard time thinking that's the case. Maybe he ran it by Anae but Anae didn't run it by Bronco, who knows. However Bronco doesn't seem like the kind of coach who doesn't know what's going on with his team and with player comings and goings and assistants have complete carte blanche to do entirely what they want with regards to personnel decisions.

If Sorensen had thought he had any opportunity to compete (he didn't say he wanted a guarantee, just a chance to compete), he wouldn't have left BYU. BYU coaches told him there was no chance. Lamb saw his talent right off and was tickled to get him. Lamb openly called him the best QB in the state of Utah.

btw, who's K-dog?
