he mentioned seeing Cade Cooper having success at SUU and by going FCS he...
...wouldn't have to sit out another year but could play right away. He saw an opportunity and took it. Worked well for him and of the QB's in the state of Utah during that time frame (Nelson, Heaps, Wynn, Borell, Keeton, Hays, Wilson, etc) Ed Lamb proclaimed him the best which was backed up by the NFL who didn't draft any of those guys but took Sorensen in the 7th round. Said Lamb, "It was clear right away, with his arm strength and the leadership he brought, he stood out,” Lamb said. “With the velocity he put on a pass, no question, he was a once- or twice-in-a-career coaching opportunity.”

Some guys are late bloomers, maybe that's the case with Brad (as to why no other FBS offers). He went on his mission right out of high school and could've gone the JC route to try and get some FBS offers but he was a BYU guy and wanted to play with his brother Danny at BYU (can't blame him there). It was a major gaff by BYU coaches not to see what they had.

Lamb must have a very unique and skilled eye for seeing next level talent hidden in players, when he heard Sorensen was available he put on the full court press to get him. Sorensen was the first Thunderbird drafted by the NFL and they've had a number of other players follow in those footsteps since. Lamb has a gift for sure. I'm glad he's now coaching for us.

Bronco's blind spot for evaluating talent (whether in players or assistant coaches) started to wear on me at this point. To me, his bromance with Riley was his "jump the shark" moment imo at BYU. It was unfortunate it took a few more years before he decided to leave but I think it was well past time and worked out for the best.

He was a nice coach and did some good things, we could've certainly done a lot worse, but I'm really happy now to have Sitake.
