term. Guys want to leave as soon as they can. Guys want to go to other programs to play. It is not normal in back to back years to lose your best player to Europe.
Guys like Tavernari, Abouo, Collinsworth, Haws etc could have left earlier than they did and had the exact same chance at a career that they did having stayed. They didn't want to pass up that chance at making noise in the Big Dance. They didn't want to pass up the chance to play with their brothers. They didn't want to pass up the chance to be the big man on campus. They didn't want to pass up the chance to play in front of 20,000 at the Marriott Center.
Now guys are leaving whenever they can. We can continue to say it is a one off situation for each individual, but they are adding up in droves. We need to find a way to fix this.
Bryant - (rumored and somewhat confirmed by Rose) Europe
Mika - Europe
Bartley - Transfer
Chatman - Transfer
Toolson - Transfer
Hartsock - Quit
Carlino - Transfer
Aytes - Transfer
Kaufusi - Quit
Some of these are a bigger deal than others, no doubt. Still when you look at what has happened over the past few years it is an eye opening trend. We need program stability. We need to change whatever culture is making them leave.
I don't blame a guy like Bryant if he does leave for Europe. Still, I want him to want to stay at BYU for that extra year to make national noise and do all those things I mentioned above. My guess is with both him and Mika that if they were having more "fun" they would have stayed. Success certainly makes things more fun.
