It’s amazing what good coaching can overcome in
College football. BYU has done it in the past with less talent, you could even look at Boise back when they beat Oklahoma in the bowl game and even the Utes after Urban Meyer showed up and took McBride’s recruits to an undefeated season and win over Alabama.

With less overall talent a coach might have to be a little more creative but can be done with great coaching.

I would argue too that BYUs starters overall are very good and close to or ahead of many p5 teams talent wise, not with the best of the best but enough great talent to be competitive and have a shot. This puts even greater emphasis on great coaching for a team like BYU to be where they want to be. This is also why injuries to starters are also very critical as BYU does not usually have as much depth as the top tier teams they are playing on their independent schedule.

I would say focusing on these injuries and doing everything possible to prevent them, coupled with getting the absolute best coaches possible are the two greatest things BYU can do in addition to the things they already do like recruiting etc.
