Maybe someday with experience but he’s nothing more than an average head coach in today’s environment. Grimes hasn’t ever called plays but has a ton of experience in quality programs so I’m hopeful there. ARod is also an above average to good coach but not great based on past results where he was at. Compare that to the run we had in the 70’s and 80’s and part of the 90’s, our most successful stretch from a overall winning and national respect perspective...look at those coaches. Night and day difference.

My concern is that we did have great coaching with LaVell and his staff, we did have the athletes we wanted and could develop. Some blue chip guys mixed in with what we could say were the top G5 guys in today’s world (who chose BYU over SDSU, Utah, Colorado St and even some bigger programs) and those coaches developed them like crazy, found diamonds in the rough, etc. We were a destination that kids wanted to be a part of...not just the LDS kid but all shapes and sizes.

Top to bottom today’s roster/staff doesn’t come close to what we had on those rosters...depth was and will probably always be similar. We’ve lost that luster with average seasons, Indy, injuries, transfers, HC stuff...all of it. Uphill road ahead for sure.
