I get that he is an excellent PR guy, I don't know a single person that has talked to him that has stated he isn't really likeable. He is also a great face for BYU athletics as a guy who had moderate success professionally after playing at BYU and joining the church. He has great costumes at Halloween, and I am sure he is a wonderful and fun person.
Unfortunately, his tenure as AD has not been a success. The football program is at its lowest point since the Crowton years, and basketball has been on the steady decline.
Tom has a lot of challenges as BYU AD, and I feel for him. The job is extremely difficult, and he did not create the circumstances under which BYU athletics currently operate (academic standards, HC, coaching salary restrictions, changing political climate). But he has also failed to adapt to these circumstances to create a culture of success in BYU athletics. We should search for someone who is able to do this. (They may not even exist, but we cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results).
