The way I look at it is where can I go with it...

For example, when my group of friends goes camping in Moab there is a place we like to camp that is off the beaten path just south of Hole in the Rock. It isn't a terrible trail that really requires a technical driver but I'd like to be able to take my daily family car to the camp spot instead of leaving it in the parking lot and hitching a ride the rest of the way with friends' families.

As we get our next daily family car that is kind of how I am looking at it. For true off roading I'd still rather get a Jeep or legit SUV.

GLS is the same platform as the WK2 grand Cherokee, I can't remember if the current gls has a low range.

Yeah, GLS can have the two-speed which is why I don't think BMW matched its capabilities.

Agreed, except the high end real off roader king is the g-wagon. Then the range, then LX570/200 series
