You could do all that, though, at 1/2 or maybe 1/3 the price

The new BMW X7 is great off road... as long as off road is an obstacle course set up in a paved parking lot...

GLS is the same platform as the WK2 grand Cherokee, I can't remember if the current gls has a low range.

Yeah, GLS can have the two-speed which is why I don't think BMW matched its capabilities.

Let’s face it...you get the X7 because it will have more space, AWD, and more

Agreed, except the high end real off roader king is the g-wagon. Then the range, then LX570/200 series
Bert609
1/9/19 8:14am
This is true. Didn’t even think about the G-wagon.

Tell him I'll trade for my l322 range Rover. It has a better ride than the g wagon..

I would, but he collects cars. He loves Mercs in particular. He also has

If that dude had gotten a non-humanities degree he could have bought a garage big enough to cover the entire car...

That is awesome! I love it.

The real high end off roader is the g wagon squared that was built last year,

My range rover stickered for $90 and my lx470 was close to $70 or $80, granted, I paid pennies on the dollar
Bert609
1/9/19 8:33am
Yeah, they definitely make them capable for a reason and I've heard Rovers are

Yes. Actually cheap to own BUT require maintenance

I'm definitely still drawn to the X7. Looks like a great car and I like the styling better than the GLS.

Let’s take our $100k vehicles off roadinng boys...

Let the first owners baby them. I believe I read somewhere that by the second range rover owner, 50% had been off road,
Bert609

Yup.

They will eventually be used off-road, but that will be by someone that bought

Having only recently become a Range Rover owner, I was kind of blown away at how nice they ride.

They are amazing off-road from both their ability and luxury.
specsauce
1/9/19 8:47am
Seriously we all know that nobody will go offroad in their nearly $100K BMW

The way I look at it is where can I go with it...
Tokolosh
1/9/19 8:21am
You could do all that, though, at 1/2 or maybe 1/3 the price
spinner
1/9/19 8:27am
But can you do it and still get the tech, lux, and drivability of a bimmer or merc?

That's my point exactly - these are just very expensive luxury vehicles

Not a non-factor. Keep in mind the secondary market that Bert is mentioning above...

That's how the wrangler is though. They sell 150k units s year, I know many a small crawler' owner who
Bert609
1/9/19 9:05am
I don't disagree with your point
spinner
1/9/19 9:14am
The problem is "extremely limited" is a misnomer. For the X7, I agree. For other luxury SUVs, I disagree,

I really don't know enough to comment on individual models
spinner

I agree with that, but that could be said of all SUVs

Sometimes you just want to know you can hop a curb if you need to.

Out of the box, what are the three most off-road capable SUVs (not a Jeep or truck)?
kccougar
1/9/19 8:45am
FJ Cruiser (not in production any more)
Pete
1/9/19 8:48am
Should have clarified new.
kccougar
1/9/19 8:50am
I'd go with the 4Runner if it has to still be in production. Land Cruiser and Land Rover to fill out the top 3.
Pete
1/9/19 8:53am
Probably the G550, 4Runner TRD Pro, and maybe one of the Grand Cherokee variants.
Tokolosh
1/9/19 8:53am
No jeeps
Pete
1/9/19 8:56am
Then throw in the Disco SVX or a Cruiser.
Tokolosh

I should have said no Wranglers as I was really looking to compare SUVs and I really consider the Wrangler and FJ
kccougar
1/9/19 9:40am
Range Rover.. still the best off-road SUV (just sell before warranty expires)

2018? Wrangler Rubicon, Gwagon, Range Rover in that order.
Bert609
1/9/19 9:07am
4runner and 200 series land cruiser are next to round out the top 5. It starts to get murky after that.
Bert609

Sherp, Icon FJ, and Mahindra Roxer

If only Mahindra would work on something roadworthy.
