Do you know how a stake president calling is decided?

Typically, two of the Seventy will be assigned to make the call. They arrange to interview every Bishop, EQ Pres, High councilor, and a variety of recommended other men from the stake (40-50 people). They also arrive that day having fasted for about 24 hours to that point.

I’m sure that mistakes can still be made, but not likely.
