I'd be interested to see how the yays would respond if it was some type of tax

By the government for a social program. I thought CB was for letting people decide and having choices.

I bought season tickets every year as a student, but I'd think it's more appropriate for me to pay $50 more than for someone not interested in sports to be forced to pay it. I'd be frustrated if I was being charged an extra $X to support some random entertainment others were passionate about.
