BYU in general has pretty low student fees. I recall being shocked by the size
of fees at the University of Illinois when I did graduate school. It was something like $500/semester and living on $17K/year, that was a fairly large chunk. I think there they were mostly for services like the student center and the use of the gym and such. All things I didn't really use while I was there. In general, I don't like paying for things I don't use but at the same time I do enjoy being on the receiving end of discounts for things I do use based on everyone paying a little. In other words, I don't care for subsidizing the bus services but I do appreciate the free library. I think it all evens out in most such cases.

That said, I don't think students should be forced to subsidize athletes. If anyone should subsidize athletes, it should be all of use who complain incessantly about their performance and that of those trying to lead them. We care and we should give them support. Forcing the Michelle Peralta's of the world to pay them, while maybe poetic, isn't cool.
