Yes. Athletics directly effect academic perseption of a university.
Students indirectly benefit from the athletic department and athletic conference affiliation because it increases the exposure of the institution and effects the academic perseption. Colorado State's president hit on this when comparing CSU to Oregon and how Oregon athletics had created this illusion that Oregon was a better university than CSU, which I not true. It was his case for stadium expansion. I agree with him.
