Why BYU should institute an Athletics "fee"

According to U.S News and World Report, BYU is the least expensive private university in the country (please do not say that you make up for it with tithing. Millions of people across the world pay tithing and do not have the benefit of a BYU education. Paying tithing is immaterial). Incidentally, BYU is also among the least economically diverse universities in the country (meaning most of the students attending BYU come from relative financial security), and finally, BYU has one of the lowest rates of student loan debt in the country.

Anecdotally, as a student I bought plenty of ramen and other cheap groceries. I had worked out a monthly budget with my parents and I stuck to it. On many occasions I considered giving plasma for extra money, several of my siblings had, but health issues prevented it. However, I didn't have a job during much of my undergraduate schooling, and I didn't take out undergraduate student loans. I could have, but chose not to.

If the posts on this thread are accurate, and I don't know exactly where the information is coming from, BYU Athletics runs a yearly surplus of approximately $5M and the revenue derived from the proposed charge would likewise be $3-5M. The $5M surplus is surely being reallocated back into the University. So the proposed program could be supported by retaining that surplus for athletics. However, there is some benefit to having the students actually "pay" for the sports pass, i.e., continuing to reallocate the $5M from athletics to the University (which is, in turn, offsetting student costs elsewhere) and having the students pay an athletics "fee."

People are more likely to use something that they have paid for. Part of the goal here is to increase student attendance, and they are more likely to use the All Sports Pass if they have paid for it than if it is free. For these reasons, and assuming the data above is correct, I would support the move proposed here.
