You could tell he didn't connect with the players. That is why they have been leaving in droves for other universities, for Europe, for any reason they could find. There has been no joy in BYU basketball for years.
Dastrup would have had a good year, but the way his playing time was treated (make a mistake and you are gone) would have made it tough for anyone to come back. When Yoeli came back he knew the coaching staff could play the same game. Too bad.
You could see Dave took a different approach to life. Good for him. Bad for the basketball team. Let's face it as your coach you want someone that eats, breathes and sleeps basketball. He didn't anymore.
Dave is one of the all-time great basketball coaches in BYU history. He just stayed a bit longer (4-5 years) than he probably should have. I wish him well in his retirement.
