Given this information, I find it disturbing that his contract was extended when
it was.

The team had clearly plateaued and wasn't performing up to the usual standard that Rose himself had set and something was clearly wrong. He basically admits that he lost many of the key players on his team and could no longer manage or relate to them. He sees a significant number of players either transfer or go pro early even when their pro prospects are bleak. The program is handed down sanctions for the Emery debacle, and while some would argue it wasn't his fault, he is ultimately the one responsible for ensuring his players know what is allowed and what isn't. Health issues are a tricky one. If that was his only issue and it wasn't significantly affecting his ability to coach then that is one thing, but in this case it was just one of a myriad of issues.

I'm truly thankful for what coach Rose did. 2006 through 2011 were some amazing years to be a BYU basketball fan. The Jimmer years were amazing and opened up doors for me to talk about BYU and the Church to those who I would have otherwise been unable to (being military during those years, starting religious conversations was a little risky). But at some point you have to look at the performance and say, "We thank you for what you've done, but we need to move on." I'm amazed Holmoe not only didn't do that, but extended his contract instead. It makes me wonder if, while he may be a scheduling wizard with good connections, he is out of touch with what really is going on inside the programs he is over.
