The program had already plateaued, players were already leaving early, and we were losing to teams that had no business being within 10 points of us. There were signs that something was very wrong. That's not the type of "stability" that I, and many others, like to see. Sometimes instability is a good thing as long as it remains short term.

When we fired Roger Reid in 1996 the program was thrown into chaos, but it wasn't the end of the world. Cleveland turned out to be a solid head coach, and within 3 years we were competitive. Within 4 we had a conference regular season title and a conference tournament title, and we were beating Rick Majerus coached Utah teams. Was it ugly at first? Yes. But I'm not complaining that we had to go through a little "instability" to get back to that point.

Also, Tom Holmoe had already set a precedent. He fired men's volleyball coach Tom Peterson for basically the same thing as what happened with Emery. Except Peterson had won a national championship a couple of years before and is still the only coach to win a championship at two different schools. Why Rose was for some reason untouchable despite the program's poor performance and other red flags I have no idea.
