Bronco overcame many of those with fanatical effort and player buy-in, maximizing the benefit of mature RMs that knew how to lead.

Kalani came in with a bunch of feel good BYU connected coaches with almost no college coaching experience.

The first year they survived because of the senior leaders on the team and two of the best athletes on offense that BYU has ever had...even though they were hurt and Detmer's system did not fit them. The next year it fell apart because the fanatical effort was gone, the senior leaders were gone and Detmer's system did not work...whether due to the system itself or the inability of the QB to play his way.

When it all fell apart, Kalani knew he had to right the ship and bring back the focus and discipline. It helped...but I am afraid the Bronco fanatical effort is not coming back. We do seem to have some good players and losing the way we did appears to have helped the players focus and give more effort. I am optimistic we will improve because of that.

However...I personally think we will be lucky to get back to the 9-11 wins every year again that we were at as long as we continue floating along in Independence with big schedules and lots of travel.

Fingers crossed...but not overly optimistic.
