You can live a normal healthy life with only one half of one kidney, but you're blessed with two. My brother gave me a kidney almost 13 years ago. Since then he's had 4 more kids, finished grad school, and run numerous 5k's and triathlons. I've since gotten married, had 4 kids, finished undergrad and then grad school. I have limitations - but I'm alive and not on dialysis.
You won't be allowed to donate unless the transplant team is POSITIVE you will be healthy with just the one and not in jeopardy. You'll have a cool scar, still live a healthy life, and most important you'll help change a life.
Thank you to all who have donated - to family or as a good samaritan.
Feel free to ask me any questions about the process of it all. I'm happy to help in any way I can.
