Notre Dame has made independence work with consistency to the schedule, despite no conference.
Annual games with Navy, USC, Stanford plus 5 games against ACC opponents. Even before the 5-game ACC affiliation, Notre Dame also usually played 4 or 5 teams from the following: Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Syracuse, Pitt, Boston College, Georgia Tech...
BYU has Utah, Utah State, and Boise State. I'd like to see Hawaii more often than not and one of the PAC 12 California teams every year and Arizona or ASU frequently. Also, a couple games each year from San Diego State, UNLV, Air Force, Colorado State, or Wyoming. Finally, I'd get a Texas school each year ..and then fill the rest of the schedule with Big Ten, SEC, and ACC schools.
The 2020, 2021, and 2023 schedules largely fit this pattern. So, keep it up.
