My evidence is anecdotal

but it wasn't long ago I was heavily involved in high school football in Utah and as a result got to speak with a lot of potential recruits and college coaches, particularly at the state playoffs at RES. While recruits do love to play storied programs a majority of them were not a fan of independence. Most preferred to be playing for something.
