We are opposite your situation, our youngest is in 8th grade.
Oldest we were similar to you and older kids did not get them until Jr High, but youngest has had one for maybe a year and a half. Got oldest hand me down finally and again just swapped out for oldest son phone, when she got a new one.

Reasons for us, no home phone and she was by herself at times needed her to be able to call or call her.

She has I think a IPhone 6, but it is a hand me down. She has I think Facebook, but mostly she is on Pinterest.

No phones allowed upstairs main floor only, no basement when we lived in Utah and upstairs. No basement in TX.

Phones are in parents room or kitchen counter at night, and we have full access. So far we have been fortunate to only have one have a problem with pornography, and I don’t think it was because of a phone.

He actually was really good not having it in his room, leaves it on the steps or table when they go upstairs.

Youngest my wife has not enforced the rules as much, and I at times feel fighting a losing battle, but still fight.

We feel now it is almost impossible to get messages from church, seminary, school, etc without a phone. We used it when we taught SS, and around here where wards are bigger it is much different than Utah.

But you have to have safeguards and do what you feel is right. Eventually they are going to go out on there own and make mistakes we feel it would be better to make those at home where we as parents can help support, teach, and work with on how to control when they go out in life.

Good luck man, fact is technology can be great, but can be horrible if they are not taught safeguards.
