I counted 16 G5 teams with a better win-loss record last season than BYU but
that are lower in the 247 recruiting rankings than BYU is.
Of course winning helps. but schedules that are played are also a factor in recruiting. Scotty Edwards who chose Stanford is quoted as saying he likes Stanford's schedule.
