Skepticism of other experts and their data is a core part of the scientific process
Good scientists take that skepticism offline and try to replicate the data in their own independent tests and then respond with their own data and theories.
Lay persons, politicians and media respond without thought or action. This has always been true. What's different today is that the ignorant masses, media and self-serving opportunists each have an internet bullhorn and can publish their thoughts anytime they want.
