we are all suffering for it. There will be "tons" of investigations on this and I very strongly suspect that when the dust settles the findings will point in the direction of us going overboard. The huge negative consequence of this will be the next time a virus spreads (and there will be a next time) the government will say "we REALLY need to self quarantine because THIS virus is serious" and America will largely ignore them. Can't cry wolf when there (relatively speaking) is none and it not come back to bite us in the rear.
