You have a columnist saying he would be “compelled to run”
But doesn’t cite the rule (maybe he did but I skipped over that part).
But he didn’t say WHEN he is compelled to vacate first base and run. And, although he claimed he could have been tagged out while standing on first base, there still has been no evidence of that presented to me.
From my interpretation of the rule, the runner only has to vacate the base once the batter reaches first base.

You can tag a player out standing on a bag if they are not safe on the bag. They could tag the runner standing on first
