A big part of the problem is so many want to fight all the way despite odds
I dated a girl while she was working as a provider in a probably the largest family practice in Utah.
We would go out occasionally with colleagues and classmates from medical school. I remember a few conversations they would talk about patients willing to fight with little odds of beating the prognosis. They all said in their situations they wouldn’t treat it because of the odds. They would just quit and enjoy the rest of their time. They’re very pragmatic about the reality we all die and it happens at any age.
I think many people aren’t willing to accept death is going to happen earlier than they expected. They want to fight so bad to hang on to the time they feel they’re entitled. They pass on this attitude to their families who feel they need to fight until the end instead of just saying this is it. Let’s make the best of what we have left.
