I think it's because a lot of people, like me, have had close calls with

bicyclists where they have come very close to hitting a bicyclists because the bicyclists was riding recklessly and/or disregarding the laws/rules of the road. In almost every case the bicyclist will "lose" that battle, but it will scar the driver of the vehicle for life even if they weren't at fault.
