The mistake was putting any money into the pool. BYU should drop this sport.
There isn't enough money to properly fund every sport and no chance that BYU will be a significant player nationally, any more than U. of Florida will be a skiing powerhouse.

Redirect the funds into sports with larger followings and the opportunity to be competitive, e.g. baseball, women's gymnastics, track and field, et al. Put it into establishing a ski team, a sport where we can offer athletes unbelievable facilities at minimal cost. We would also have another head-to-head rivalary with the Yewts, who have often been the National Champions.

Swimming has a very small BYU following and is a sport that most students don't even know we field a team.
